Impression of the Li People

2023









This series of works is based on the Li culture, which was described to me by a stylist friend of Li descent. The images, connected by words, represent my initial imagination of the Li people. The clan inhabits the Chinese island of Hainan and is matriarchal, with women typically holding the reins of power in the family while men mostly obey them. I served as the creative planner and photographer for this shoot, working alongside the stylist. The models featured in this shoot are mostly relatives of the stylist. Local customs, tools, and traditional clothing were incorporated to showcase the Li culture from a fashion perspective. Hainan Qiongzhong is known for its gentle and accommodating nature, resembling that of a female womb. Through my camera and a female perspective, I engaged in an in-depth conversation and exploration with this ethnic group, capturing the history of a Li family and showcasing the unique charm of the Li culture.This is also my attempt to combine the various possibilities of national culture and fashion. I hope everyone can pay more attention to these disappearing cultures.
